Internship and Volunteer Opportunities
with Urban 4-H


Urban 4-H Youth Development partners with youth-serving organizations to build sustainable programs that meet the unique needs of urban youth. The Urban 4-H Internship and Volunteer program was created both as a resource for partners and a learning opportunity for volunteers interested in youth development and youth workers new to the field. Urban 4-H recruits interns and/or volunteers to lead or co-lead 4-H after school programs at one or more partner sites and provides training, education, and ongoing support to them throughout their term. In turn, our partners gain quality staff to lead their programs.

High-quality intern support

Urban 4-H is committed to providing the best support to both interns and partners in order to advance the quality of programs for urban youth. Research and experience tell us what it takes:

  • Comprehensive training and education: Interns receive training before and during the start of the program that prepares them to foster positive behavior, plan quality lessons using the experiential learning model, and facilitate positive youth development.

  • Ongoing support/mentoring: Urban 4-H staff meets regularly with interns as mentors, to support the development of planning and problem-solving methods.

  • Partner collaboration: Urban 4-H staff coordinates regular meetings with interns and site coordinators to ensure that both intern and partner needs are being met.

  • Sufficient time to plan: In addition to a variety of curricula and other resources, one of the best tools we can give interns to ensure program quality is time to plan. Urban 4-H interns receive paid planning time

  • Evaluation and documentation: Urban 4-H staff conducts evaluation of each intern to assess their development as professionals. Interns provide weekly documentation of lessons, activities, and feedback to be used as future resources.

 



Fall '08 Internship opportunities

 

2Excel! at World Cultures Magnet School: Interns will plan and deliver an after school program for 2Excel! at World Cultures Magnet School in St. Paul. 2 Excel! partners with Urban 4-H to engage 5th and 6th grade youth in activities that get them focused on and excited about their role as the leaders of their lives. Two internships are open to co-plan and co-deliver the program, which will run from 3:30-5:40 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 2008 to May 2009. Each position is 6 hours a week; hours include program and planning time.

Any internship position can be combined with other positions (regardless of site).

Jackson Elementary: Interns will plan and deliver 4-H after school program at Jackson Elementary (St. Paul). There are three programs for which we are hiring interns October 6, 2008 to April 22, 2009:

1) - Mondays/Wednesdays 2:35-4:35 for youth in grades 3-6 (one hour with 3/4 grade, one hour with 5/6 grade). Intern will plan and deliver enrichment activities with a fitness focus. Position is 7 hours a week. Hours include program and planning time.

2 and 3) - Tuesdays/Thursdays 2:35-4:35 - two interns are needed for youth in grades 3-6 (one hour with 3/4 grade, one hour with 5/6 grade). One intern will plan and deliver science enrichment activities. The other intern will plan and deliver “Teenzine” program. In this program, youth learn about personal leadership through the process of taking pictures using digital cameras, and then using their pictures to create a group magazine.

Position is 7 hours a week. Hours include program and planning time.

Any internship position can be combined with other positions (regardless of site).

Maxfield Leadership Club: An after school leadership club at Maxfield Magnet School in St. Paul with 5th and 6th grade youth. Intern will plan and deliver activities that get youth focused on and excited about their role as the leaders of their lives. The program will run Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:45-5:45 from October 2008 to May 2009. Position is 3.5 hours a week; hours include program and planning time.

Any internship position can be combined with other positions (regardless of site) for those who wish more hours.

Cleveland Middle School: Interns will plan and deliver 4-H after school program at Cleveland Middle School (St. Paul) October 6, 2008-May 14, 2009:

1) - Mondays/Wednesdays 3:45-5:45 for girls in grades 5-8 (one hour will be with 5/6 grade, one hour will be with 7/8 grade). Intern will plan and deliver enrichment activities with a science focus. Position is 7 hours a week. Hours include program and planning time.

2 and 3) – Tuesdays/Thursdays 3:45-5:45 for youth in grades 5-8 (one hour will be with 5/6 grade, one hour will be with 7/8 grade). Intern will plan and deliver “Teenzine” program. Description of Program Leader Internship

  • The Urban 4-H Internship program has positions available for interns who will plan and lead after school programming for urban youth. These positions are 3-16 hours per week, depending on the program site. During the interview, applicants have the opportunity to express their interest and availability for each program site.

Pay

  • $10/hr. Hours include training as well as program planning and delivery.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Deliver educational program with children during nonschool hours
  • Prepare lessons and program activities (i.e. food and fitness, technology, leadership, arts, aerospace)
  • Assist in planning and provide leadership to field trips and all other off-site activities
  • Maintain program, evaluation, and lesson documentation
  • Work collaboratively with Urban 4-H Youth Development team and community partners and volunteers
  • Supervise and enforce program rules and expectations

Required qualifications:

  • Current college or university student
  • One year of experience working/volunteering with and/or on behalf of youth
  • Success in teaching and leading youth activities
  • Ability to effectively work in culturally and ethnically diverse settings
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Flexibility and dependability
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Computer skills
  • Access to reliable transportation

Preferred qualifications:

  • Currently majoring in education, youth or child development, sociology, psychology, or related field; foreign language skills.

Volunteer Opportunities with Urban 4-H

Program Assistants

  • Volunteers are needed to aid in planning and/or delivering 4-H after-school or site-based programs in Minneapolis and St. Paul. These programs, which occur during nonschool hours in both school and community based settings, allow youth to explore a variety of interests through hands-on learning experiences. Activities may include homework help, 4-H enrichment activities, and recreation. Programs typically run once or twice a week, any time between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during the school year, or 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the summer time, Monday – Friday. Volunteers can choose from over 10 different program sites based on their interests.

Urban Youth Lead Assistants:

  • Work with any of our Urban Youth Lead programs on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Volunteers are needed to help plan and lead sessions as well as aid in recruitment for programs. Urban Youth Lead Assistants need to have a strong desire to work with adolescents in their own leadership development. Programs typically run once or twice a week between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during the school year, Monday – Friday.

Project Leader

  • Project leaders share their interests and skills (e.g. photography, rocketry, computer science, foreign language) with a small group of youth and possibly adult volunteers. Demonstrations may be over a period of weeks or only one time, lasting from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Media/Web Design

  • Volunteers are needed to help design and implement an Urban 4-H web system, as well as other informational and promotional materials. Hours are set between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
