Message from Brad Rugg:

The generic version of the 2008 county fair premium book is now available (see sections below). Please let us know of any difficulties you encounter.

As you review these documents, please note that changes are highlighted in Plum bold text.
The 2008 Premium Generic Book was reviewed by Jim Deidrick, Center for 4-H & Community Youth Development and Marcia Woeste, Regional Educator. This team updated and provided content to key areas. Their changes, are noted in the highlighted areas and bring up to date information to the premium book. Thanks to that team!

One thought...many of you still seem to offer an abundance of livestock classes. Most of you tend to follow the classes and lots we use at State Fair. Many of your shows are much, much smaller than our State Fair shows and when you offer a full roster of county fair classes, many kids are in small classes with little or no competition. I know that it can be intimidating to alter historic classes and sometimes it is easier to just leave it alone. But please know that I am willing to work individually with any county to design classes that give kids a better level of competition and hopefully a better county fair experience. Just ask...

Finally, it would be a miracle if these documents were error free. We will update it as necessary and keep you informed of any changes that have more than misspelling merit.

Happy fairing!! Feel free to direct questions to Karen Nelson, Todd Mehrkens or me.

...Brad Rugg

2008 Premium Book Sections: ~ Due to committee assignments, Updates and changes will be posted as soon as possible.

Word versions may be saved for adapting to your county's needs.

Please note that changes (i.e. additions, suggestions, birthdates, etc.) to the generic premium book are in Plum bold font on this year's pages.

FairPlus! note: The Dept/Div/Class codes have changed for nearly all the project listings. This means that the "old" codes will need to be deleted and these new ones created. (In FairPlus! it is not possible to assign a new code to an existing class). To assist with this process, a new FairPlus! Share File will be created for County Fair usage, along with detailed instructions for this process. Watch the 4-H Software Support site for more information: www.fourh.umn.edu/mgtsoftware .

Additional Notes: If Additional changes are made after 2/25/08 they will be in orange. These would only be corrections found after the initial posting of the documents and minor in nature.

There are four (4) sections for the Premium Book.

  • County Fair - Exhibit Rules word

Each county will need to complete the first part of this section. List rules, expectations, schedules, etc… that are unique to your county fair. The items listed are points to consider and may or may not be appropriate for your county. The information for Exhibits, Animal Science and State Fair or State Show Eligibility reflects State Fair requirements and should be uniform from county to county.

  • County Fair - Premium Schedule, Club Activities, Demonstrations & Presentations word

Counties will need to edit this section as needed. The "Premium Schedule" will need to be edited to show your premiums for your county fair. You will need to add other county/club events or activities unique to your county and delete areas that you do not use.

  • County Fair - General 4-H Projects word

This section includes all project areas listed in the State Fair Premium Book and reflects the State Fair exhibit guidelines. Cloverbuds is also included in this section. You will need to add all exhibits that are unique to your county. Enter them in the most appropriate Department and Division, then create your own Class number (i.e. Dairy Foods would be coded as P-500-10). You may also wish to include date and time of special judging events (i.e. Cat Show). Note that exhibit suggestions are not meant to be inclusive.

  • County Fair - Animal Science Projects (Livestock) word One change made in Dairy birthdate chart 4/3/08, added astericks to Pigeons classes on 5/9/08

You will need to edit this section to reflect the size of your individual shows. The notations (in red) with each specie area provide suggestions. Delete all Division and Classes that will not be used in your show.
