On Saturday October 31, Minnesota 4-H demonstrates that Science Matters! We are one of 20 organizations showcasing science experiments and activities that youth and their parents can do in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association Regional Conference on Science Education. Come join us at the Minneapolis Convention Center for this fun and engaging learning experience on Saturday morning, from 9:00 to 11:00. (There is no charge to participate, but you must register; you can do this by printing and filling out this form.)

Can't make it? No problem. You can try these 4-H science experiments at home!

PROJECT WEB PAGES

Every 4-H project has the potential to be a SET project. However, strong SET projects use an inquiry-based learning approach, improve SET abilities, provide opportunities to improve mastery-independence-belonging-generosity skills, be based on National Science Education Standards, and be led by trained adults. Currently, the SET team is working to determine which projects are SET projects.

These links contain information, resources, or trainings related to specific projects, click on the project of interest:

Aerospace Exploring the Environment
Geospatial Robotics
Video Water/Wetlands
Wildlife Biology Power of the Wind

Please check back periodically as additional projects may be added to the above list as well as tools and information about how to design a strong SET project or club.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCESS

4-H Million Trees
4-H clubs and units across the nations are invited and encouraged to join this international service-learning project. The vision of 1,000,000 new trees planted by 4-H youth from approximately 90,000 clubs and units across the United States and Canada means:

  • Native trees add beauty and heritage to urban, suburban, and rural communities across the nation
  • Trees improve local air quality
  • New trees absorb runoff, and bring groundwater to the surface
  • Shade from these trees can help cool buildings, reducing air conditioning electricity needs, and eliminating pollution and carbon emissions associated with this power generation
  • Offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion by absorbing and sequestering about 48,000,000 million pounds of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year
  • New trees make up for trees lost to deforestation worldwide
  • 7,000,000 4-H youth learn they can personally change the world
  • 4HMT hopes to empower a generation of leaders by teaching them they can make a difference both individually and as a group.

4-H and Nickelodeon Partner to Launch New Online Game
"Flip N' Flow" is a brand-new, interactive, on-line game giving youth and mentors the opportunity to learn about water conservation and challenges them think about steps they can take to participate in going green! Featuring boy-genius Jimmy Neutron, the game supports 4-H's SET initiative to spark youth interest in science and prepare one million new young people for America's technology workforce.

National Year of Science 2009year of science
"How are you celebrating?" 2009 is the Year of Science. Why 2009? The year coincides with a number of important science-related anniversaries including the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln. Among his other claims to fame, Lincoln founded the National Academy of Sciences and signed the Morrill Act which created the land grant system of agricultural colleges. Visit the Year of the Science website for events, information, and activities.

TryScience
Are you looking for on-line science activities? IBM in partnership with the New York Hall of Science has created TryScience, an on-line science center with Experiments, Adventures, and Field Trips in which youth can participate. Also include are off-line activities, lessons, and ideas on how to use these activities with your youth. The Association of Science-Technology Centers has also partnered to provide links to over 400 science centers and museums.

Parks & Trails TV
Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota is producing their very own cable television show aptly called Parks & Trails TV. The show focuses on the people and places that make Minnesota’s park and trail systems the envy of the nation. The 28-minute, documentary-style program is being produced three times annually hosted by former Minnesota Attorney General Skip Humphrey.
