A new computer and the Plus! software

Installing 4HPlus! and FairPlus! system files

NOTE:

These instructions apply to NEW or Re-Imaged Computers ONLY!! Do not re-install the software, for example, on a computer that currently has 4HPlus! or FairPlus! installed on it, in an attempt to resolve a problem.

The first step is to install the basic application - which will setup the database engine, create the necessary directories and registry entries, install system files, etc.

Download the install files to any location on your hard drive, (i.e. the Desktop) - the file can be deleted after the install is complete.
- 4HPlus! install file
- FairPlus! install file
Run (double click) the 4HPlus! install file, which will open the Zip file containing the installation file [mn4hsy.exe]
Run (double click) the installation file [mn4hsy.exe]
Click on [Unzip]
When the file is unzipped, confirm the message box (indicating the files unzipped successfully)
The install process will then begin (there may be a slight delay)
Accept default options suggested by the installation program. Do not choose to "run" the software from the installation dialogue - simply "finish"
Repeat the process for FairPlus!

NOTE:

If the software has been installed to, and run from, a file server, DO NOT reinstall to the file server. If 4HPlus! and FairPlus! are being run from a server, please contact 4-H Software Support.

NOTE:

4HPlus! and FairPlus! will NOT properly install without at least one printer driver installed on the computer.

Although the software is fully installed on your computer at this point, it will not function properly and it won't contain any of your existing data. The next step will accomplish that.

Transferring Data from the old computer to the new computer

Transferring data between computers involves moving a copy of the [C:\CKV] folder from the old computer to the new computer. This is most often accomplished by using a shared network location or a USB Flash drive.

To begin, using Windows Explorer on the NEW computer, delete the entire C:\CKV folder, and all it's folder and subfolders (this installed dataset and files is of no value if a "good" CKV folder exists)
Then, using whatever method works best, get a copy of the [C:\CKV] folder from the old computer and place it at the same place (root level of the C:\ drive) on the new computer.

NOTE:

Please keep in mind that all 4HPlus! and FairPlus! data, the current version of the program and all supporting files are contained in the CKV folder and therefore care must be taken with the "current" and "good" CKV folder.

For example, be sure to only delete the newly created, empty CKV folder that comes with the install process.

Also, be sure you are "copying" the CKV folder (not "moving" it) and then, after the transfer is complete and everything is working correctly, go back and delete the original.

Creating Desktop Icons

At this point, the software will be fully installed and while a Desktop Shortcuts should be visible for FairPlus!, the following Shortcuts will need to be created as follows.

Close or minimize all running program, so that the desktop becomes visible
Do a right-click on an empty area of the desktop - anywhere is fine, the shortcut you are about to create can be moved later.
Click on [New] [Shortcut]
On the resulting window, click on [Browse], then navigate to the following file(s):
- For County Offices: 4HPlus! - C:\CKV\4hplus\mn\win4hp1.exe
- For Regional Offices: CKV Launcher - C:\CKV\tools\ckvshell.exe
Click on [Open], then [Next]
Rename the shortcut if you wish
Click on [Finish]

You should now have a completely functioning installation of 4HPlus!

Both FairPlus! and CKV Launcher (in Regional Offices only) will need to be registered (via the [Register] menu item/button in each program. This can be accomplished by contacting one of the following:

Running with Limited User Privileges

While the software does not install in a way that makes it possible for the user to run with limited (less than Administrator level) User Privileges, this can be done as follows:

Install the software with Adminstrator Privileges
Grant full user access to the C:\CKV folder, including all subfolders and files
Grant full user access to the following files, all located at the root level of the C:\ drive
- BackupLog.txt
- FairBack.txt
- FPStartUpLog.txt
- FPUserLog.txt
- PDOXUSRS.NET
- ProgressLog.txt
Grant full user access to following files, which might be at the root of C:\ or they might be in the C:\Windows\System32 folder (or both places)
- Skcl.dll
- Machnm1.exe

NOTE:

One limitation of running with Limited User Privileges is that an error message will be generated whenever a backup is initiated by the user (or when an automatic backup is triggered, for example when a new version is loaded). These error messages can be ignored, as a backup is also created in within the CKV folder. This will only happen in 4HPlus!
